It was just like a joke when
some Malawians kept on saying that we must keep a close watch in the electoral
events in Malawi because they said the many times what happens in Zambian
politics tend to repeat itself in Malawi. Many ignored this school of thought
and said that Zambia politics is different from Malawi and that there was no
way the Zambian scenario could repeat itself in Malawi. However the recent
Presidential elections in Malawi has just proved that whatever happens in
Zambia politics to some extend tend to repeat itself in Malawi.
In Zambia President Lupiah Banda who was
finishing up the late Mwanawasa’s term of office lost the election to Michael
Sata of the Patriotic Front. In Malawi where similarly the incumbent President
Dr. Joyce Banda who was also finishing up the remaining two years of the late
President Prof Bingu Wa Muthalika, lost the election to the late president’s
young brother, Prof Arthur Peter Muthalika who is Malawi’s newly elected leader
for the next five years of office
The other similar elements
has been that when Rupiah got into power in Zambia, Anti Corruption drive
relaxed because he disbanded the Anti Corruption Task Force which was a
powerful anti corruption unit within the Zambia Anti Corruption Commission
which Mwanawasa created with a goal of pouncing on any kind of politicians and
powerful in society so as to make the law equal to all Zambian. In Malawi
however the two years of Dr Joyce Banda’s rule was marred by the cash-gate
corruption saga where government lost huge some of someone dubiously. This has
been part of the many challenges that negatively affected the political journey
of the President and the Peoples party.
So if this theory is to
continue coming true then Malawians must keep watching what happens in Zambian
politics so that we can exactly know how to handle and address issue using the
Zambian political mirror.
