ITS PROF ARTHUR MUTHALIKA, MALAWI’S NEW STATE PRESIDENT-CONGRATULATION

By: Rev Dr Qeko

It’s official that Malawi has a new President and his name is Prof. Arthur Peter Muthalika of the Democratic Progressive Party.  This has been announced by the Malawi Electoral Commission after a long court battle where other presidential contenders wanted the votes recounted after what they noted as massive vote irregularity. But it was the High court judge Nyirenda who ordered that MEC cannot be given extra days to do a vote recount.

According to MEC Chief Commissioner declaration, Justice Mbendera SC, Prof Arthur Peter Muthalika of the DPP got 36.4%, Dr. Lazarous Chakwera of the MCP 27.8% while Dr Joyce Banda of the PP won 20.2% and the UDF’s Atupele won 13.7%.

This has been the must constested Presidential elections where some stakeholders complained of electoral vote rigging and incompetence. This also led to the invisible holy alliances where the PP, MCP and UDF all had one song to sing where they blamed the DPP of having rigged the votes.

However many continue to wonder as to how a ruling party could loose the elections and come third when they had all the necessary tools to win the elections. Also others continue to wonder why the then ruling party the PP didn’t put in place winning strategy during the just ended elections?

We therefore would like to wish the outgoing State President, Madam Dr Joyce Banda a happy stay as she continues to serve this nation in different capacity and also the incoming President Prof. Arthur Peter Muthalika  God’s wisdom and blessings he lead the People of Malawi toward a much awaited economic transformation.

THE ZAMBIAN SCENARIO REPEATING ITSELF IN MALAWI POLITICS

BY: Rev Dr Qeko

It was just like a joke when some Malawians kept on saying that we must keep a close watch in the electoral events in Malawi because they said the many times what happens in Zambian politics tend to repeat itself in Malawi. Many ignored this school of thought and said that Zambia politics is different from Malawi and that there was no way the Zambian scenario could repeat itself in Malawi. However the recent Presidential elections in Malawi has just proved that whatever happens in Zambia politics to some extend tend to repeat itself in Malawi.

In Zambia President Lupiah Banda who was finishing up the late Mwanawasa’s term of office lost the election to Michael Sata of the Patriotic Front. In Malawi where similarly the incumbent President Dr. Joyce Banda who was also finishing up the remaining two years of the late President Prof Bingu Wa Muthalika, lost the election to the late president’s young brother, Prof Arthur Peter Muthalika who is Malawi’s newly elected leader for the next five years of office

The other similar elements has been that when Rupiah got into power in Zambia, Anti Corruption drive relaxed because he disbanded the Anti Corruption Task Force which was a powerful anti corruption unit within the Zambia Anti Corruption Commission which Mwanawasa created with a goal of pouncing on any kind of politicians and powerful in society so as to make the law equal to all Zambian. In Malawi however the two years of Dr Joyce Banda’s rule was marred by the cash-gate corruption saga where government lost huge some of someone dubiously. This has been part of the many challenges that negatively affected the political journey of the President and the Peoples party.

So if this theory is to continue coming true then Malawians must keep watching what happens in Zambian politics so that we can exactly know how to handle and address issue using the Zambian political mirror.

MALAWI PRESIDENT DR. JOYCE BANDA LOOSES THE PRESIDENTIAL RACE TO PROF. ARTHUR PETER MUTHALIKA

 By: Rev Dr Qeko

It’s now official that Malawi state President, Madam Joyce Banda has lost the Presidential race to Prof. Peter Muthalika who has managed to get 36.4% while his predecessor has only managed to get 20.2% of the national vote respectively. This elections was the most hot and contended election in that there were about twlelve presidential candidate who all wanted to make it to state house.

Such Presidential candidates include, JB and APM themselves, Lazarus Chakwela,  Atupele Muluzi, Mark Katsonga, Davis Katsonga, James Nyondo, Friday Jumbe, kamuzu Chibambo and Pastor Helen Singh.

On Parliamentary vote, the DPP won the race again by getting 50, MCP 48, PP 26, UDF 14, Chipani cha Fuko and Aford got a single seat while independent have managed to get 52 of the seats in parliament.

As Members of Parliament are to be sworn into office, Malawians are looking forward to seeing how life will be like in a new parliament where close to 70% are new comers. Also the failure of the old guards in Malawi parliamentary life gives lesson to the new comers that they must stay principled and not live like political prostitutes moving from one party to the other because in the new Malawi the electorates sees and are able to judge at the end.
