It’s official that Malawi
has a new President and his name is Prof. Arthur Peter Muthalika of the
Democratic Progressive Party. This has
been announced by the Malawi Electoral Commission after a long court battle
where other presidential contenders wanted the votes recounted after what they
noted as massive vote irregularity. But
it was the High court judge Nyirenda who ordered that MEC cannot be given extra
days to do a vote recount.
According to MEC Chief
Commissioner declaration, Justice Mbendera SC, Prof Arthur Peter Muthalika of
the DPP got 36.4%, Dr. Lazarous Chakwera of the MCP 27.8% while Dr Joyce Banda
of the PP won 20.2% and the UDF’s Atupele won 13.7%.
This has been the must
constested Presidential elections where some stakeholders complained of
electoral vote rigging and incompetence. This also led to the invisible holy
alliances where the PP, MCP and UDF all had one song to sing where they blamed
the DPP of having rigged the votes.
However many continue to
wonder as to how a ruling party could loose the elections and come third when
they had all the necessary tools to win the elections. Also others continue to
wonder why the then ruling party the PP didn’t put in place winning strategy during
the just ended elections?
